Going vegan has become increasingly popular over the last five to ten years. Between animal cruelty, health issues, and harmful chemicals and foods fed to the animals, our society has become a lot more sensitive to meat overall. Whatever the motivation, we as a country are starting to see a shift in food interest that is heading back to our roots, quite literally. While the motivators to leave our steak knives behind seem convincing initially, why choose vegan? Let’s take a look at what veganism has to offer, and perhaps realize what you won’t miss when you choose it.
Planning Made Easy
While it may take some creative thinking at first, planning meals around a vegan diet is extremely simple, and delicious. Though our culture is to add as many condiments to things as possible, you will be surprised at the astounding flavor simple foods like sweet potatoes, fresh tomatoes, or nuts have. If you think about it, a lot of the food you order at a restaurant is able to be made at home with a few ingredients. Even things like smoothies, oatmeal with fresh fruit, or berries can give you the satisfaction of something sweet, without ever needing to turn on your oven. Don’t even get us started on guacamole.
The common comment you may encounter will probably sound like, “eating healthy is too expensive, I can’t afford it.” However, this is drastically untrue. Looking at simple foods like nuts, produce (in season), grains, or lentils, are far less expensive when compared to steaks. Not to mention, simple, fresh foods don’t contain the chemically altered sugars that convince your brain you’re hungry when you’re not. Which means, when you eat simple foods, you will stay fuller, longer (more on this another time).
A Little Goes a Long Way
One of the best benefits of choosing a vegan meal, is you don’t have to choose it every time in order to benefit from it. Studies have found that those who choose alternatives to meat, even only part of the week, have: a lower rate of obesity, lower risk of type II diabetes, lower BMI, and weigh up to 20 percent less than meat eaters. Not to mention, consuming higher amounts of fruits and vegetables has been shown to decrease chances of developing multiple kinds of cancers.
